As the 2025 Gaston County Middle School Conference basketball season gets underway on Wednesday, competitive races are seen in both the girls and boys races.
The defending champion Grier boys and Holbrook girls are candidates to repeat but according to coaches voting, both teams are expected to face stiff challenges.
In the boys race, Belmont is the favorite and one of 3 teams to receive 1st-place votes; Holbrook and Grier are the others.
In the girls race, Holbrook enters the season with a county-record 37-game winning streak and is a 3-time defending county champion and is the favorite again with Bessemer City also receiving a 1st-place vote.
