As a young person who grew up in Boiling Springs, N.C., in the 1970s an annual highlight of the Gardner-Webb College season were Bulldogs’ “home” games at the Charlotte Coliseum (now Bojangles’ Coliseum) on Independence Boulevard that were preliminary contests before ABA Carolina Cougars’ games.
Gardner-Webb had six such contests and played against Guilford (twice), Western Carolina, UNC-Asheville, Spring Arbor, Mich., and Barber-Scotia.
Turns out Gardner-Webb wasn’t the only local school to use Charlotte’s Armory-Auditorium, Park Center and Charlotte Coliseum for “home” games.
The forerunner of UNC Charlotte, the Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina (called CCUNC) opened in the fall of 1946 as a night school that held it classes at old Charlotte Central High School (where Central Piedmont Community College is currently located) and its athletic teams were called “Owls.”
The school’s football team used Memorial Stadium and the school’s basketball team used the adjoining Charlotte Armory-Auditorium and later Park Center (now Grady Cole Center) after a fire destroyed the Armory-Auditorium on June 8, 1954.
Other local schools that used Park Center and the Charlotte Coliseum for “home” games were Davidson and UNC Charlotte (more on that later in the series) and smaller schools like Belmont Abbey and Johnson C. Smith.
The Abbey used Park Center as its homecourt for much of the tenure of legendary basketball coach Al McGuire while J.C. Smith used the old Second Ward High gymnasium before the Brayboy Gymnasium it currently uses opened in 1960.
The Abbey also hosted games at the old Charlotte Coliseum.
Gardner-Webb’s six games featured extraordinary star power in the Bulldogs’ two contests against Guilford.
In the Feb. 17, 1971 game, the collegians looked a lot like the pros that would follow them in an up-and-down, exciting 105-104 Bulldogs’ victory that helped ensure Gardner-Webb’s first-ever national tournament appearance as a four-year school a few weeks later. Future pros M.L. Carr (Guilford) and George Adams (Gardner-Webb) scored 24 and 16 points, respectively, in the game.
Two seasons later, in a Feb. 24 game, future NBA stars Lloyd “World B.” Free (Guilford) and John Drew (Gardner-Webb) scored 35 and 22 points, respectively, in a game that ensured Guilford’s national playoff appearance – the Quakers would eventually won the 1973 NAIA national title – and ended up eliminating Gardner-Webb.
The Abbey would play eight games at the old Charlotte Coliseum – one ABA preliminary game, four preliminary games for University of North Carolina games and two preliminary games apiece before Davidson and UNC Charlotte contests.
In two of the Abbey’s preliminary games before North Carolina-Notre Dame contests, Al McGuire was able to coach before one of his coaching mentors Frank McGuire. Though not related, both McGuires were from New York City and were famous for bringing players from that city to the South as they built their winning programs at Belmont Abbey (Al) and North Carolina and South Carolina (Frank).

Tampa Bay 48, Carolina 14: The Panthers never led in a game in which Carolina yielded its most points (48) and yards (551) this season to the Buccaneers and former Carolina quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Tampa Bay’s 551 yards also is 3rd-most yielded in franchise history and helped the Buccaneers sweep Carolina for the 4th time in the last 5 seasons.
