A pair of former Cleveland County high school football standouts have announced their intentions to transfer to NCAA Division I schools.

Former Kings Mountain High standout A.J. Richardson is leaving Norfolk State for N.C. State and former Shelby High standout Santana Hopper is leaving Appalachian State for Tulane.

Richardson, a 2023 Kings Mountain High graduate, is a 6-foot-1, 245-pound linebacker who was the 2022 Big South 3A Conference defensive player of the year for the Mountaineers who made 259 tackles (30 for sacks) in 39 career games.

At Norfolk State, Richardson had 69 tackles in 11 games (7 starts) as a freshman in 2023 to earn FCS Freshman All-American and 2nd team All-MEAC honors and had 100 tackles in 12 starts as a sophomore in 2024 to earn 1st team All-MEAC honors.

Hopper, a 2022 Shelby High graduate, is a 6-foot-2, 265-pound defensive lineman who helped the Golden Lions to two state titles and a 33-5 record in his last three years of high school while making 176 tackles (24 1/2 for sacks).

At Appalachian State, Hopper had 71 total tackles in 26 games, was a 2nd team freshman All-American and honorable mention All-Sun Belt selection as a redshirt freshman in 2023 and a 1st team All-Sun Belt selection in 2024.
