8-4-26 roundup: Pro football, baseball, basketball, auto racing, soccer and rodeo, Legion baseball
By Richard Walker
Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly will become the second-youngest Pro Football Hall of Famer on Saturday when he is inducted in his home state of Ohio.

It’ll also conclude a busy weekend for his team.
When the Cincinnati native is inducted, the 35-year-old Kuechly will be the second-youngest inductee behind Chicago Bears running back Gale Sayers, who was inducted at 34 at the home of pro football in Canton, Ohio.
Kuehly will become the Panthers’ seventh former player or executive to be inducted; Others are Reggie White (2000 Panthers player inducted in 2002), Sam Mills (1995-97 Panthers player and 1998-2004 Panthers coach inducted in 2009), Bill Polian (1995-97 Panthers executive inducted in 2015), Kevin Greene (1996 and 1998-99 Panthers player inducted in 2016) and Julius Peppers (2002-09 and 2017-18 Panthers player inducted in 2024).
A seven-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro in his eight-year career Kuechly will be enshrined on Saturday with four other players – quarterback Drew Brees, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, kicker Adam Vinatieri and running back Roger Craig.
A 2012 first round draft pick of the Panthers (No. 9 overall) out of Boston College, Kuechly was a Pro Bowler from 2013 to 2019, first team All-Pro in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018, second team All-Pro in 2016 and 2019, NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2012, NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2013 and named to the NFL’s All-Decade team of the 2010s.
Also a two-time NFL tackles leader and three-time Butkus Award Winner, Kuechly retired on Jan. 14, 2020 at 28 years old due to a series of concussions.
Following retirement, Kuechly briefly served as a Panthers’ scout before joining the team’s broadcast team in the 2022 season and has also worked at a TV college football commentator for CBS Sports.
A Cincinnati, Ohio, St. Xavier High standout, Kuechly was a three-time All-ACC selection and 2011 consensus All-American at Boston College and was a 2020 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
His father Tom Kuechly – a soccer goalkeeper for Xavier who is now retired from the family’s auto parts distribution business in Ohio – will inducte his son.
“The reason he is presenting me is just the influence that my parents have had on me and everything they’ve done for my brothers and me,” Luke Kuechly told The Charlotte Observer. “They set an example for everything as to what the right thing to do was. I think it’s a good opportunity to highlight my dad and show him appreciation for everything he and my mom have done.”
The Panthers’ busy weekend starts on Thursday when they play Arizona in the Hall of Fame exhibition game in Canton at 8 p.m.
Before official induction ceremonies on Saturday at noon, Kuechly will attend the “gold jacket dinner,” on Friday where he will officially receive his gold jacket along with his fellow Class of 2026 members and participated in a Saturday morning parade in Canton.
Since Kuechly calls about a dozen Panthers’ regular-season games every year on the team’s radio network – and will continue to do so this season – he is slated to be a halftime guest on the Panthers’ network with play-by-play announcer Anish Shroff and color commentators Jim Szoke and former Panthers teammate Kurt Coleman.
With his Hall of Fame induction and his progression in the business, Kuechly is also going to be Netflix’s No. 1 TV analyst for a handful of NFL games this year, The Athletic reported, including one game in Australia in September.
