6-26-26 roundup: Pro football, basketball, baseball, auto racing, soccer and rodeo, Legion baseball, College basketball
By Richard Walker
Lincolnton’s L.J. Smith has already begun his college basketball career.

The former two-year Lincolnton High standout who spent last season at Oak Hill, Va., Academy recently re-classified in order to graduate high school early so he can enroll at Ohio State University.
Smith recently participated in offseason drills for the Buckeyes, for whom he committed to play for last fall.
At Ohio State, he joins a top-rated class that already included five-star prospect Anthony Thompson, who was rated the No. 7 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class.
Smith was a five-star in the 2027 recruiting class before re-classifying to start his college career this fall.
Rated the No. 25 overall prospect and No. 5 combo guard in the 2027 recruiting class by the 247Sports composite rankings, Smith is a 6-foot-4, 180-pounder. And he’s already drawing favorable comparisons to being the next “great” Oak Hill product – a school that has already produce Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant and N.C. products like Kinston’s Jerry Stackhouse and West Charlotte’s Jeff McInnis.
Smith scored 2,227 points in his prep career that began as an eighth-grader at Hickory Christian. His 1,475 points at Lincolnton in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 season rank him fifth in school history for career scoring and his 960 points in the 2024-25 season is a Lincoln County record.
