Two of Lincoln County’s most highly-recruited football players in history have committed to out-of-state football programs.

Nearly two months after East Lincoln’s five-star tight end Jaxon Dollar committed to play at the University of Georgia, Lincolnton’s four-star linebacker Jalaythan Mayfield committed to Indiana University on Friday.

Dollar is a 6-foot-5, 222-pound two-sport high school star who picked Georgia over Clemson, Miami, Notre Dame and Texas on April 30.

Mayfield is a 6-1, 230-pound linebacker who picked the defending national champion Hoosiers over Georgia and Miami, Fla.

 

 

 

 

 

 

College baseball

North Carolina has advanced to its third College World Series in school history.

The Tar Heels, who rolled through their half of the CWS bracket with an impressive unbeaten record, also are seeking to becoming the ACC’s third national champion.

By advancing, North Carolina becomes the seventh ACC team to advance to the finals – and its eight if you count Wake Forest’s pre-ACC 1949 appearance before the ACC was formed out of the Southern Conference.

In those championship appearances, the ACC is 2-6.

That includes back-to-back heartbreaking finals losses by the Tar Heels in 2006 and 2007 to Oregon State – and the 2006 loss saw UNC win the opener of the best-of-three series before losing the last two contests.

Previous ACC champions were Wake Forest in 1955 and Virginia in 2015 and previous runner-ups were Wake Forest (1949), Georgia Tech (1994), Florida State (1999), North Carolina (2006 and 2007) and Virginia (2014).

Golf

The Rutherford County Sports Hall Of Fame (RCSHOF), presented by Hardin’s Drug, in conjunction with Golf Sponsors Forest City Honda and Chick-fil-A of Forest City, is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2026 T. Max Champion Memorial Golf Tournament.

The tournament will be held on Friday, July 31 at the Apple Vally Golf Course in Lake Luke, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Registration fee is $100.00 per player or $400.00 for a team of four and covers the green fee, cart usage and lunch.

First prize for Gross and Net Winners is $600.00 per team. Other prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries. Proceeds from the event go to support the RCSHOF Scholarship Fund and registration deadline is July 21.
