6-17-26 roundup: Pro football, baseball, auto racing, soccer and rodeo, College baseball and softball, High school basketball, Legion baseball
By Richard Walker
For the second straight year, a local high school basketball star is transferring away from the area as Huss sophomore Jaleel Smith is transferring to Oak Hill, Va., Academy.

The Charlotte Observer basketball player of the year in the 2025-26 season after he led the Huskies to their first state championship in 15 years, Jaleel Smith averaged 26 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 steals for the Huskies.
A year ago, Lincolnton’s L.J. Smith (no relation) also transferred to Oak Hill after his sophomore season.
The owner of two school records – 810 single season points and 59 points in a game (both last season) – Smith has 1,454 points in his two-year Huss career. He is fourth in school history behind Kerrion Moore (1,822 points, 2014 Huss grad), Donterious Hughes (1,513 points, 2007 Huss grad) and Shawn Smith (1,479 points, 1991 Huss grad).
The news on Jaleel Smith comes as he was named to his second straight all-state N.C. high school basketball team by the HighSchoolOT.com website.
He is joined on the all-state team by honorees from East Lincoln, Gaston Christian, Huss, Kings Mountain and Lincolnton.
