6-14-26 roundup: Pro football, baseball, hockey, auto racing, soccer and rodeo, College baseball, Legion baseball

By Richard Walker

The Stanley Cup trophy will be coming back to North Carolina.

Taylor Hall, Jackson Blake and Nikolaj Ehlers scored goals and the Carolina Hurricanes won 3-0 at the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday night to win the NHL’s Stanley Cup championship series four games to two.

It gives the Hurricanes, who moved to North Carolina in 1997, their second Stanley Cup championship in franchise history – as well as the only two major professional sports championships in state history.

Undrafted rookie goaltender Brandon Bussi made 22 saves and picked up the win for Carolina.

The Hurricanes’ win came after Vegas coach John Tortorella boldly proclaimed after Thursday’s 4-2 loss in Game 5 that he was leaving his clothes at his North Carolina team hotel in anticipation of a return trip.
