Local products litter the rosters of Gaston College’s Region 10 regular season championship-winning baseball and softball teams who enter their respective tournaments in South Carolina this week as favorites.

The softball Rhinos, 55-4 overall and ranked No. 17 nationally, begin action on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C. against the winner of Thursday’s USC Union-USC Sumter winner.

Under head coach Michael Steuerwald, local products are infielder Addison Marr (Cramer), outfielder Mallie Courson (Lincoln Charter), utility player Meredith Bolick (Highland Tech) and pitcher Aidan Ledbetter (Crest).

The baseball Rhinos, 51-3 overall and ranked No. 2 nationally, begin action on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Lexington, S.C. against the winner of Friday’s USC Union-USC Lancaster contest.

Under head coach Shohn Doty, local products are infielder David Nicks (Gaston Christian), catcher Kandan Zollo (North Gaston and Kings Mountain), pitcher-outfielder Landon King (South Point) and pitchers Talan McConnell (South Point), Zach Kimmel (Huss), Carter Jessen (Cramer) and Chase Ghantt (North Gaston).

 

 

 

 

 

College football

Two-sport star Jaxon Dollar of East Lincoln will make college commitment on Thursday.

Ranked the No. 1 football recruit in North Carolina for the 2027 class, Dollar’s finalists are Clemson, Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame and Texas.

Also a basketball standout, Dollar is considering playing both sports in college.

Golf

The Rutherford County Sports Hall Of Fame (RCSHOF), presented by Hardin’s Drug, in conjunction with Golf Sponsors Forest City Honda and Chick-fil-A of Forest City, is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2026 T. Max Champion Memorial Golf Tournament.

The tournament will be held on Friday, July 31 at the Apple Vally Golf Course in Lake Luke, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Registration fee is $100.00 per player or $400.00 for a team of four and covers the green fee, cart usage and lunch.

First prize for Gross and Net Winners is $600.00 per team. Other prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries. Proceeds from the event go to support the RCSHOF Scholarship Fund and registration deadline is July 21.
