4-27-26 roundup: Pro basketball, baseball, football, auto racing, soccer and rodeo, High school baseball, tennis, soccer and softball, Middle school baseball, girls soccer, tennis and track

By Richard Walker

A former Duke basketball standout won the 2025-26 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year, but it wasn’t the Charlotte Hornets’ Kon Knueppel.

Kon Knueppel

Cooper Flagg, the Dallas Mavericks’ No. 1 overall pick last summer, edged his college teammate Knueppel to win the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy.

Flagg led all rookies in scoring (21.0 ppg), ranked fourth in rebounding (6.7 rpg), second in assists (4.5 apg) and steals (1.20 spg) and fifth in blocks (0.91 bpg) in his 70 games.

During the recently-completed season, Flagg joined Michael Jordan as the only rookies to lead their team in total points (1,473), rebounds (466), assists (316) and steals (84) since steals were first recorded in 1973-74.

Flagg’s top moment may have been in becoming the youngest player in NBA history to score at least 50 points in a game when he tallied 51 against the Orlando Magic on April 3.

Flagg edged Knueppel by a 26-point margin that is second smallest in Kia NBA Rookie of the Year voting under the current format that was adopted in 2003.

Kneuppel was set to become the fourth rookie of the year in franchise history – joining Larry Johnson (1991-92), Emeka Okafor (2004-05) and current teammate LaMelo Ball (2020-21).

The No. 4 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Knueppel had previously been named 2025-26 NBA Rookie of the Year by The Sporting News on April 21.

Knueppel had helped spark a Charlotte NBA turnaround as the Hornets improved from 19-63 to 44-38 one play-in tourney win shy of ending the franchise’s now 11-year playoff drought.

The 6-foot-6 swingman, Kneuppel averaged 18.5 points per game, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 81 games in his rookie season. A former Wisconsin Lutheran High and Duke University standout, he made 42.5 percent of his 3-pointers while making 3.4 per game.

His total of 273 3-pointers – one more than Ball’s 272 – led the league and shattered Sacramento Kings guard Keegan Murray’s previous rookie record of 206 set in 2022-23.
