The Carolina Panthers opened their 2026 NFL Draft on Thursday night by choosing offensive tackle Monroe Freeling of Georgia.
Rated No. 13 overall by longtime NFL Draft Observer Mel Kiper, the Panthers selected Freeling at No. 19 overall.
A 6-foot-7, 315-pounder, Freeling became a starter for Georgia in 2025 and is considered a player with “the prototypical frame for an NFL offensive tackle.”
The Panthers were linked to Freeling in the pre-draft process, but offensive tackle was considered a position of need with starting left tackle Ikem Ekwonu expected to miss the start of the 2026 season with injury (right patella tendon) and 31-year-old starting right tackle Taylor Moton with two years left on his contract.
Already this offseason, the Panthers signed free agent offensive tackle Rasheed Walker to a one-year, $4 million deal.
Barring trades, the Panthers have six more selections in the draft – 2nd round No. 51 and 3rd round No. 83 on Friday and 4th round No. 119, 5th round No. 158, 5th round No. 159 and 6th round No. 200 on Saturday.

Holbrook’s boys and Belmont’s girls won the Division I titles and Stanley’s boys and Mount Holly’s girls won the Division II titles on Wednesday at the Bessemer City High School track.
Next week, the Division I and Division II teams will meet for the 2026 Gaston County Conference championship at the Stuart Cramer High School high school track on April 29.

The Rutherford County Sports Hall Of Fame (RCSHOF), presented by Hardin’s Drug, in conjunction with Golf Sponsors Forest City Honda and Chick-fil-A of Forest City, is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2026 T. Max Champion Memorial Golf Tournament.
The tournament will be held on Friday, July 31 at the Apple Vally Golf Course in Lake Luke, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Registration fee is $100.00 per player or $400.00 for a team of four and covers the green fee, cart usage and lunch.
First prize for Gross and Net Winners is $600.00 per team. Other prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries. Proceeds from the event go to support the RCSHOF Scholarship Fund and registration deadline is July 21.
