3-11-26 roundup: Pro basketball, auto racing, soccer and rodeo, College basketball, High school basketball, baseball, soccer and softball
By Richard Walker
Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy came up short in its first high school basketball state title game appearance.
The Gryphons lost 79-54 to Vance Charter on Wednesday in Class 1A championship game at Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem.
Thomas Jefferson, which finished fourth in the powerful Catawba River 1A/2A/3A Conference in the regular season, got hot in the playoffs with a home win before upsetting top-seeded Robbinsville and fourth-seeded Chatham Charter to advance to the Western N.C. 1A title game against league rival Jackson Day last week at Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Gryphons won that matchup 61-48 to advance to face a powerful Vance Charter team in the finals.
The Knights finished 23-2 behind 6-foot-6 senior game MVP Gary Wilkins (23 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocked shots).
Chance Malachi and Omar Griffin had 10 points apiece to lead coach Will Lewis team, that had previously won only three playoff games in their history.
