2-25-26 roundup: Pro basketball, auto racing, soccer and rodeo, College basketball and football, High school basketball, wrestling and baseball, Middle school basketball

By Richard Walker

One of the area’s former standout athletes and winningest coaches recently passed away when Tommy Pruett died at 79 on Feb. 10.

Tommy Pruett coaching the Burns High School basketball team in the 1970s

Pruett, a championship-winning coach for Kings Mountain Junior High, Burns High School and Shelby American Legion Post 82, first made local headlines as a multi-sport athlete at Shelby High School.

After graduating from Shelby High in 1965, he played baseball for Shelby Post 82 and at Gardner-Webb Junior College and Appalachian State University where he became a rare participant in the world series for both the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Also a head football coach at East Gaston and Blacksburg, S.C., high schools, Pruett first coached at Kings Mountain Junior High before beginning a long tenure as football assistant coach, girls head basketball coach and head baseball coach at Burns.

He is the winningest girls basketball coach in Burns’ history (353-218) record and also guided the Bulldogs to the 1978 N.C. 3A state championship game in Hickory.

He was a football assistant coach for Ron Greene when Burns won its 1994 state title.

And on the baseball diamond, he was the first 100-game coaching winner in Burns’ history and guided Post 82 to a divisional title in the team’s first year playing at Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium in 1976.

Pruett died after having health issues in recent years.

Born on Sept. 27, 1946, in Cleveland County, Pruett spent more than 30 years in education with 25 of those years at Burns.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Julia Pruett, and is survived by his sons, Rodney Pruett (wife Lori), Thomas Pruett (wife Lori) and Ryan Pruett (wife Taylor), his brothers, James Pruett and Larry Pruett (wife Pamela) and 10 grandchildren (Jagger, Ava, Blake, Sydney, Drew, Hadonn, Paxton, Lily, Jurnee and Dalton), nieces Kimberly, Stacy, and Lauren and nephews John and Joseph along with numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

A gathering of family and friends to reflect on his legacy was held on Feb. 21 at Shelby’s Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.
