The 2026 Gaston County Conference basketball regular season concluded on Monday and the upcoming playoff field has been set.
In boys competition, York Chester is the No. 1 seed for the first time since 2004 after finishing with its first unbeaten season (10-0) since 1991 when it was a junior high. Belmont (9-1), Stanley (8-2) and Holbrook (7-3) are the other playoff teams.
And since the middle school era began in 1998, the all-time playoff participant and champion Grier (5-5) missed the field by two games; The Knights have made 20 playoff appearances with seven titles since 1998.
In girls competition, Holbrook is the No. 1 seed for a fifth straight season as it extended its county-record winning streak to 59 games with another 10-0 regular season finish. Bessemer City (8-2), W.C. Friday (8-2) and Grier (7-3) are the other playoff teams.
In the middle school era, Grier is joining Southwest and Cramerton for most playoff appearances with 15 while Holbrook and W.C. Friday have a chance to break the four-way tie for most championships; Holbrook, W.C. Friday, Southwest and Stanley have won four each.

College athletics
Charlotte 49ers chancellor Sharon L. Gaber announced on Monday that Kevin White will be their next director of athletics on Monday.
White comes to Charlotte after spending the previous four years as deputy director of athletics at Clemson University.
“I am honored to join Charlotte at such an exciting time,” White said in a news release. “Charlotte has tremendous potential, strong institutional support, and a passionate fan base. I look forward to working with Chancellor Gaber, our coaches, staff, student-athletes, and supporters to build a championship-driven culture and position Charlotte Athletics for sustained success.
“My family has been incredibly supportive of me throughout my career and will continue to be an important part of what we do at Charlotte. My wife, Jari, our oldest son Justin and his wife Sunita, along with Kamden and Kinley could not be more excited to join me as part of Niner Nation.”
White will be officially introduced at the Thursday afternoon news conference in the third floor salons at Halton Arena.
“Kevin has helped lead a standout athletics program at Clemson and brings the vision, energy and leadership necessary to elevate Charlotte 49er Athletics,” Gaber said in a news release. “He understands what it takes to compete and succeed in today’s environment and has a proven ability to strengthen programs, build meaningful partnerships and position athletics departments for sustained growth. We are confident he is the right leader to help Charlotte reach the next level.”
White joined the Clemson athletic department in April of 2022 and helped lead several of the Tigers’ strategic campaigns, facilitated significant student-athlete wellness growth, facility enhancement, athletic success, operational efficiency and served as a connection point for the Board of Trustees. White also assisted in running the day-to-day operations of the department as the second in command, playing a key role in the Athletic Department’s relationship with University leadership on several key issues.
Prior to his time at Clemson, White served as a Deputy AD and Chief Operating Officer at Northwestern (2017-22) and as Chief Operating Officer at Southern Methodist University (2014-17). He began his administrative career at Georgia State (2009-14).
A Chattanooga, Tenn., native, White earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina, where he was a member of the junior varsity basketball team. He also earned a master’s degree at Georgia State and an MBA at Kennesaw State.
White will become the 8th athletic director in UNC Charlotte history; The previous ADs have been Harvey Murphy (1965-1972*), Bill Foster (1973-1975*), Lee Rose (1975-1978*), Clyde Walker (1978-1984), Jeff Mullins (1985-1990*), Judy Rose (1990-2018) and Mike Hill (2018-2025).
