2-19-26 roundup: Pro basketball, auto racing, soccer and rodeo, College basketball and football, High school basketball, wrestling and baseball, Middle school basketball
By Richard Walker
Earlier this week, North Lincoln High’s girls basketball team was ranked No. 3 in N.C. Class 5A and considered one of the favorites to win a state title.
But after determining it was playing a player in spending her fifth year in high school, the Knights forfeited 17 games and may not even qualify for the state playoffs.
The forfeits dropped North Lincoln from 19-4 to 2-21 before Thursday’s 68-52 victory over Bandys.
Lincoln County Schools spokesperson Shanti Clancy responded to an email request for information from The Charlotte Observer with the following email:
“At this time, the matter is under review. We are actively working with school administration and the appropriate athletic governing bodies to gather accurate information and ensure that all policies and procedures are followed. Because the review is ongoing, we are not able to provide additional details at this time. Our priority is to ensure a thorough and fair process for all students and staff involved.”
The N.C. High School Athletic Association will announce postseason pairings Saturday afternoon using a computer algorithm that takes into account the team’s record and its strength of schedule.
In Class 5A class, 48 teams qualify. Entering Thursday’s game, North Lincoln was ranked No. 49.
