As the 2026 Gaston County Middle School Conference basketball season gets underway on Wednesday, competitive races are seen in both the girls and boys races.

The defending champion Southwest boys and Holbrook girls are strong contenders to repeat but according to preseason coaches’ voting, a competitive race is expected.

In the boys race, Belmont is the favorite, Southwest is picked second and they were the lone teams to receive 1st-place votes.

In the girls race, Holbrook is the favorite as it enters enters the year with a county-record 49-game winning streak and is a four-time defending county champion; Belmont, Bessemer City, Grier and Mount Holly are picked just behind them in the preseason.
