Stanley Middle School’s Brooke Scoggins Cook earlier this week became the second Gaston County Junior High/Middle School Conference softball coach to reach 100 victories – and the 1st in the fast-pitch softball era that began in 1997.

Cook enters next week’s 2025 playoffs with a 100-63 head coaching record at W.C. Friday and Stanley.

Ironically, her historic win came in a 15-8 victory at W.C. Friday.

Only Andrea Beason, who coached Ashley/York Chester from 1974 to 1991, had previously won 100 or more games.

Earlier this season, Cook surpassed Chavis’ Callie Hahn as the winningest fast pitch coach; Hahn guided the Wolverines to an 88-16 record from 2008 to 2016.

Cook’s team is the No. 3 seed in the 4-team county playoffs that begin on Monday.

Chavis, coached by Lance Beam, is regular season for a county-record 11th time in the middle school era and county-record 15th time overall.

Chavis (8-0) hosts No. 4 seed Mount Holly (5-3) and No. 2 seed Belmont (6-2) hosts Stanley (6-2) in Monday’s semifinals.

Monday’s winners advance to next Thursday’s county championship game that will be hosted by the highest-seeded team.

Defending champion W.C. Friday was eliminated from the playoff following a loss in its Thursday regular season finale.

High school football

When the 2025 season began, new Cramer head football coach Ashton Simmons and Storm fans had high hopes for a rebound as the school began its four-year membership in the Southern Piedmont 2A/3A/4A Conference after N.C. High School Athletic Association realignment.

Cramer had struggled in the Big South Conference against larger schools in its 1st 12 years as a school. After competing as a junior varsity program in 2013, the Storm had gone 44-75 in 11 varsity seasons that were highlighted by playoff years in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022.

But Cramer entered the season having lost 23 of its last 27 games, including the school’s last playoff contest against longtime power West Charlotte in 2022 N.C. 3A playoffs.

This season, the Storm is off to a school-best 4-0 start that betters the 3-0 starts of 2017 and 2018.

Cramer has racked up that strong start against teams with a combined 4-15 record so far this season.

The competition will certainly stiffen starting on Friday when the Storm plays at the state’s high school winningest program ever in Shelby.

With a 3-2 start, the Golden Lions have 868 all-time victories and have also won 19 state championships.

After visiting Shelby (3-2), Cramer hosts Burns (2-3), visits West Lincoln (2-2), hosts Lincolnton (4-1) and plays at Cherryville (3-2) and East Gaston (0-4).
