When the Carolina Panthers visit the New England Patriots on Sunday, it’ll be the first NFL matchup of quarterbacks Bryce Young and Drake Maye who briefly appeared like they might become college teammates.
Why they weren’t is a story that involves an injury and became the foreshadowing of what is common in college football these days because of the transfer portal.
Additionally, there are similarities between the two that are striking:
– Both transferred in high school
– Both were highly-rated recruits in their classes
– Both committed to colleges they did not attend
– Both backed up eventual NFL starters as true freshmen
– After becoming starters in their second college seasons, both declared for the NFL draft with eligibility remaining
– Both were premium NFL draft picks
Young emerged as a prospect first while Maye’s family legacy predates him by more than 60 years.
Young started developing as a quarterback at Los Angeles Cathedral High School before transferring to one of the country’s most prominent programs in Santa Ana, Cal., Mater Dei.
There, he joined a legacy of quarterbacks that starred at USC like Todd Marinovich, Matt Leinart and Matt Barkley and Young would eventually join Notre Dame’s John Huarte (1964) and Leinart (2004) as Heisman Trophy winners from the school when Young won the prestigious honor in 2021.
Drake Maye’s legacy began with his grandfather Jerry Maye and continued through his father Mark Maye, mother Aimee Sockwell Maye and his older brothers Luke Maye and Cole Maye.
Jerry was a multi-sport standout at Charlotte’s Garinger High who was a star baseball player at Catawba College before playing professional baseball in the Minnesota Twins’ organization. Mark was a three-sport star at Charlotte’s Independence High School who later played quarterback for North Carolina and briefly in the NFL. Aimee was a standout girls basketball player at West Charlotte who chose not to play collegiately. Luke was a Hough High basketball standout who went from walk-on to starter at North Carolina (and 2017 NCAA champion) and is currently playing pro basketball overseas. And Cole was a Hough High baseball pitching standout who was a member of Florida’s 2017 NCAA championship-winning team.
Drake transferred from Hough to Myers Park after his freshman year of high school and also was a basketball standout for at both schools.
The connection between Young and Maye started soon after Young (a five-star recruit and rated the No. 1 overall player in the 2020 class) committed to USC in July 2018.
At the time, Young expected to arrive in the spring of 2020 and compete against then-junior J.T. Daniels for the quarterback job; Daniels had been Young’s predecessor as Mater Dei quarterback.
Maye, considered a four-star recruit and the No. 24 overall player in the 2021 class, committed to Alabama in July 2019.
But an injury to Daniels in the 2019 USC season-opener altered the path of both players.
A five-star recruit and No. 1 overall player in the 2018 class, Daniels guided the Trojans to a 5-6 record as a true freshman quarterback in 2018 before tearing his ACL in the 2019 opener.
What followed changed the futures of Young and Maye as USC committed to Kedon Slovis as quarterback and Young chose to switch from USC to Alabama in September 2019.
Maye, who was likely receiving pressure from many in the area to “stay home” and play for the alma mater of his mother, father and older brother Luke, would switch his commitment from Alabama to North Carolina in March 2020.
At Alabama, Young backed up current San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones for a season before emerging as the Heisman Trophy winner and CFP runner-up in 2021. Young would direct the Crimson Tide to a 23-4 record as a starting quarterback in two seasons while passing for 8,356 yards and 80 touchdowns and rushing for 162 more and seven TDs in his three-year career.
At North Carolina, Maye backed up current Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Sam Howell as a true freshman before becoming a starter, 2022 ACC Rookie of the Year and two-time All-ACC honoree the next two years while guiding the Tar Heels to a 17-9 record as starter.
In the pros, Young was selected No. 1 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft by Maye’s hometown Carolina Panthers; The Panthers traded standout wide receiver D.J. Moore and four draft picks (two first-rounders and two second-rounders) to Chicago Bears to move up from No. 9 to No. 1.
With Carolina, Young has endured struggles with the losing franchise as he is 7-24 as a starter in three seasons and was once benched for five games during his second season.
In New England, Maye was selected No. 3 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft to become the Patriots’ first top five pick of a quarterback since 1993 No. 1 overall selection Drew Bledsoe.
Maye started behind former N.C. State standout Jacoby Brissett for the first five games last season – and has been the starter ever since. Maye enters Sunday’s game with a 4-10 record as a NFL starting quarterback.
