Ashbrook and South Point have won the most conference titles in Gaston County history.
When they first met as old Gastonia and Belmont high schools in 1924, they played 16 games as non-conference rivals.
Beginning in 1975, they began a non-conference rivalry matching recent state championship winners.
And since 2021, they’ve played Big South Conference games in every year but 4.
On Friday night, they open the Big South 5A/6A slate against one another as 2 of the 4 remaining unbeaten football teams in Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties.
Old Gastonia Ashley and early Ashbrook teams got the better of the rivalry as old Gastonia led its series against Belmont 12-3-1 and Ashbrook was 14-8-2 in its 1st 24 meetings with South Point.
The Red Raiders began a dominating run starting with the 1999 season as South Point has gone 21-4-1 since then.
The recent streak gives Belmont/South Point a 32-30-4 advantage in the all-time series over Gastonia Ashley/Ashbrook.
But that recent dominance was snuffed out last season when Ashbrook swept 2 meetings with the Red Raiders. The Green Wave’s 17-14 regular season win ended an 18-game losing streak in the rivalry, then Ashbrook won 31-28 in the 2nd round of the N.C. 3A playoffs.
South Point has the Gaston County record for league titles with 23 while Ashbrook is 2nd with 17.
Old Belmont won 1 league title and old Cramerton won 3 before they merged to form South Point in 1969. And old Gastonia Ashley won 6 and old Holbrook 1 before they merged for form Ashbrook in 1970.
Huss (10), old Mount Holly (10), Bessemer City (9) and old Highland (7) are the only other Gaston County schools with 5 or more league titles.

With training camp slated to begin later this month, the Charlotte Hornets have whittled their roster down to 20 after released swingman DaQuan Jeffries on Thursday.
Jeffries was signed through the 2026-27 season but his 3-year contract was not guaranteed for this season and next and his $2.743 million salary for this year would have been fully guaranteed if he were on the roster on Jan. 7.
Jeffries, 28, averaged 6.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 47 games (20 starts) last season.
