Charlotte Hornets basketball fans have suffered through historic hardship.

How bad has it been?
Since the franchise was born in 1988 – and even with a 364-game home sellout streak at the since imploded 24,000-seat Charlotte Coliseum off Tyvola Road in the 1980s and 1990s – the team has struggled to win in the regular season. And it has struggled even more in the playoffs.
Entering the 2025-26 season, Charlotte ranks 27th out of 30 NBA teams in all-time regular season victories (1,193) and winning percentage (43.7) and is 29th in playoff appearances (10) and playoff wins (23) and 30th/last in winning percentage (36.5).
The Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans, who were born when former Charlotte owner George Shinn moved the original Hornets franchise there in 2002, are the only franchises in the current NBA who have not advanced as far as a conference final. And Charlotte’s last postseason appearance in 2016 makes the ongoing nine-year stretch the longest playoff drought in the league.
So, on Monday’s 2025 Media Day, when second-year head coach Charles Lee said he’s hopeful of a NBA Finals appearance in the future, it has to give Hornets’ fans some hope.
Lee was asked how he viewed last year’s Oklahoma City NBA Finals win over Indiana – a matchup of smaller market teams.
“I took away that I want to be there,” Lee said. “And we will be – in due time.”
With FanDuel Sports book listing the over/under for Hornets’ wins this season at 26 1/2, few would expect Lee’s hopes to come true this season.
But Charlotte general manager Jeff Peterson sounded upbeat as did most of his team’s players during Monday’s annual event that precedes the Hornets’ Tuesday start of training camp at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.
“Just getting to the playoffs is not the goal,” Peterson said. “We want to build a team that can sustain itself and go every year. I can’t tell you exactly when that’s going to be.”
Rookie first round draft pick Kon Knueppel, who led the Hornets to the franchise’s first summer league title in July’s Las Vegas Summer League, says the team’s goal is clear.
“When you play games, you play to win,” Knueppel said. “It’s awesome to win … but it’s a different group now. Hopefully, some of that carries over.”

Three players with local connections have played a role on their respective major league playoff teams as the 2025 postseason gets underway on Tuesday.
Former Gardner-Webb and Belmont Abbey standout Emilio Pagan is the closer for the Cincinnati Reds, former Gardner-Webb standout Mason Miller is a top reliever for the San Diego Padres and former Kings Mountain High standout Will Wilson spent part of the summer with the Cleveland Guardians.
Pagan, who played at Gardner-Webb (2010-11) and Belmont Abbey (2012-13), is 2-4 with 32 saves and a 2.88 ERA in 70 appearances for the Reds, who are the No. 6 seed in the National League and open a best-of-3 wild card series at the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Miller, who played at Gardner-Webb (2021), was traded on July 31 from the Athletics to San Diego. He is 0-0 with 2 saves and a 0.77 ERA in 22 appearances for the Padres, who are the No. 5 seed in the National League and open a best-of-3 wild card series at the Chicago Cubs.
And Will Wilson, 2016 Kings Mountain graduate, made his major league debut with the Cleveland Guardians on April 23 and spent time this season in Cleveland and with the Class AAA Columbus Clippers. Wilson hit .246 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs in 70 games for the Clippers and .192 with two RBIs in 34 games for the Guardians, who made the largest comeback in major league history to win a division or league title. Cleveland is the No. 3 seed in the American League as Central Division champion and opens a best-of-3 wild card series with the Detroit Tigers.

Ashbrook senior linebacker Caleb Gordon announced on social media on Monday that he was decommitting from Arkansas after the Razorbacks fired head coach Sam Pittman during the weekend.
A 6-foot, 217-pound linebacker, Gordon was considered the No. 20-ranked senior prospect in North Carolina and committed to Arkansas in June after receiving offers from Virginia, North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, West Virginia and others.
On Monday, Gordon said, “Thank you to all the coaches and staff at university of Arkansas for taking a chance on me, but after recent events I will be decomitting and reopening my recruitment 100%.”
