The area’s winningest high school baseball program since its school opened in 1969 has a new head coach.

South Point officially announced Evan Wise will become the Red Raiders’ 4th head coach in program history on social media on Tuesday.

Wise, a 2004 Lincolnton High graduate and 2009 Lenoir-Rhyne University graduate,, played on Cherryville American Legion Post 100’s 2003 American Legion World Series runner-up team before playing baseball at Methodist College and Lenoir-Rhyne.

He then began a long college coaching career in 2010 as a Catawba Valley Community College assistant coach. Wise has also coached at USC-Sumter, Lenoir-Rhyne, Wake Forest University, Georgia Gwinnett College and Belmont Abbey College.

Wise also coached summer league baseball, first with the Morganton Aggies of the SCBL, the Rockbridge Rapids of the Valley League and eventually the Gastonia Grizzlies of the Coastal Plain League. Wise guided the Grizzlies to a franchise-record 82 regular season wins in his 3-year tenure from 2015 to 2017 capped by the franchise’s 2nd CPL postseason title in 2017.

He’s also spent time as a New York Mets area scouting supervisor, a director of pitching for 108 Performance Academy in Tustin, Cal., and, most recently, at Lowell’s 704 Sports Academy.

At South Point, he inherits a program that has an 899-433 all-time record since 1970 under the direction of Gaston County and Belmont Hall of Famers Phil Tate (224-87 from 1970 to 1983) and Mickey Lineberger (341-212 from 1984 to 2005) and Jason Lineberger, who resigned in May after guiding the Red Raiders to a 334-134 record from 2006 to 2025.

South Point has won 25 conference titles in its 55-year history and won state titles in 1973, 1974, 1981 and 2011. The Red Raiders will enter 2026 with a 19-year streak of playoff appearances dating to 2006.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

High school basketball

3rd-year Cherryville High boys basketball head coach Antonio Griggs has announced some coaching changes on the staff.

In a Sept. 10 post on social media, Griggs welcomed two new assistant coaches – former 3-sport Cherryville High standout Landon Hahn as player scout and varsity assistant and former Gardner-Webb player John Roghelia as junior varsity coach and varsity assistant coach.

Roghelia replaces Jason Browne in the JV job with Griggs posting that Brown “welcomed a new baby at the end of last season” and plans to work with middle school-aged kids at the new city gym on East Academy Street.
