8-2-26 roundup: Pro football, baseball, basketball, auto racing, soccer and rodeo, Legion baseball

By Richard Walker

The American Legion baseball national playoffs begin 2026 with a new regional format, fewer teams and defending champion Chesapeake, Va., among the 56-team field.

It all starts on Wednesday at six sites around the country as two locations are hosting “Super Regionals” – Shrewsbury, Mass., and Cherryville.

The “Super Regionals” involve Shrewsbury hosting the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regionals and Cherryville hosting the Southeast and Mid-South regionals. Gastonia’s Sims Legion Park is hosting the early rounds of the Mid-South regional.

Other sites are Lexington, Ky. (Great Lakes), Fargo, N.D. (Central Plains), Medford, Ore. (Northwest) and Fairfield, Cal. (Western).

The 56-team field marks the smallest since 1981 when 60 teams competed for the title.

And the eight winners advance to the 2026 American Legion World Series at Shelby’s Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium Aug. 13 through Aug. 18.
