7-14-26 roundup: Pro football, basketball, baseball, auto racing, soccer and rodeo, Legion baseball

By Richard Walker

The 2026 N.C. American Legion junior state tournament begins on Saturday at Cherryville’s Fraley Field after some teams declined their bids to the 25th annual event.

And there’s a good chance of a first-time winner as host and Area IV champion Cherryville is the only team in the field with a previous title.

Post 100 won the 2021 championship while Area IV runner-up Shelby, Area I champion Wilson, Area I runner-up Washington, Area II champion Castle Hayne and Area II runner-up Beaufort all are seeking their first state championship.

Defending state champion South Caldwell, which won its fifth title a year ago to tie Cary for most in event history, was eliminated in the Area IV semifinals by Cherryville.
