6-28-26 roundup: Pro football, basketball, baseball, auto racing, soccer and rodeo, Legion baseball, College basketball, baseball, football, wrestling and tennis

By Richard Walker

Five individuals and a state championship-winning wrestling team will be honored at the 2026 Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.

East Gaston’s 2002 state tournament-winning championship team (and one of its wrestlers) are among the inductees in the 2026 Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame induction class.

They will be inducted on July 18 at the Mount Holly Municipal Complex at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at David’s Detailing,
from MHSHOF committee members and online at fametothename.org for $25 apiece.

Tareyton “Zip” Stowe is the Community Service Award winner after dedicating his career to ensure that kids have a place to play. He led recreation departments in Mount Holly and in other communities around the area and was an all-star basketball
player at East Gaston who later played at Western Carolina.

Gary Neely was a three-sport star at Mt Holly, where he won 10 varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. He was the first basketball player to score 1,000 points at old Mount Holly. His teams are represented in the Hall of Fame for winning championships in all three sports.

Brent Grice played basketball and baseball at East Gaston and later played baseball at Belmont Abbey, where he was a four-year starter, three-time captain and two-time all-league performer. Also a tennis standout as a youth, Grice later coached middle school basketball at Stanley.

Erika Hullander was a four-sport standout at East Gaston – tennis, soccer, basketball and golf – and advanced in the state playoffs in tennis and golf. She would later play soccer and tennis at Belmont Abbey.

The 2002 East Gaston wrestling team was Class 3A state tournament champion with a 11-wrestler squad in the 13 weight classes. Five of those wrestlers completed their careers in the top 100 in career wins including three state champions and one state runner-up.

Joe Pacheco was one of those 2002 state champions while wrestling in the 189-pound weight class. Also a football standout, Pacheco’s career record was 189-34 with 134 pins and two state championships. He later competed professionally in MMA (with a 7-2 record) and has coached various levels of wrestlers for 19 years.

And Jared “Boo” Hogan was a state championship in the 152-pound weight class who won more than 150 matches during his East Gaston career. He received a wrestling scholarship from the University of North Carolina and had returned to coach at Stanley Middle School where he was tragically killed at 19 years old following a car accident. East Gaston currently awards a Jared Hogan Memorial Scholarship in his honor.
