5-8-26 roundup: Pro basketball, baseball, auto racing, soccer and rodeo, High school baseball, tennis, soccer and softball

By Richard Walker

It’s been a big week for Charlotte Hornets news as ownership rewarded head coach Charles Lee for the team’s improvement and a rising star had a surgical procedure to fix an injury he suffered early this season.

Charles Lee

Lee signed an extension for undisclosed length and contract terms.

The Hornets made the largest win increase in franchise history in Lee’s second year as head coach – from 19-63 to 44-38 – and advanced to the play-in tournament before finishing one win shy of the NBA playoffs.

Lee had originally signed a four-year contract with the team in May 2024 after the organization considered Denver Nuggets assistant David Adelman, Los Angeles Clippers assistant Jay Larranaga, ESPN analyst J.J. Redick, former NBA head coach Mike Budenholzer, Miami Heat assistant Chris Quinn, Los Angeles Lakers assistant Jordan Ott, Boston Celtics coach Sam Cassell, Sacramento Kings G League coach Lindsey Harding, Houston Rockets assistant Royal Ivey and former Vanderbilt and G League assistant Jerry Stackhouse for the vacancy.

“Charles has done an outstanding job establishing a foundation for who we want to be as a team,” Hornets president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson said in a news release. “From day one, Charles and his staff have prioritized player development, creating an environment where each of our players are committed to getting better and continue to improve. He has built a team-first culture rooted in accountability, hard work and professionalism. I’m excited to keep working closely with Charles as we continue to build the Hornets for long-term success.”

After starting the season 16-28, the Hornets went 28-10 the rest of the regular season and had a No. 1 net rating (+10.5) in the NBA since Jan. 1 and were first in offensive rating (120.7) and fifth in defensive rating (110.2).

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this team and building on what we’ve started here in Charlotte,” Lee said in a news release. “I want to thank (co-owners) Rick (Schnall and) Gabe (Plotkin) and Jeff for their support as well as my coaching staff and the players for their tireless work and dedication. I’m excited about the direction we’re headed and our team’s bright future. Our players have shown a real commitment to growth, and I’m proud of the culture we’re establishing together. We’re just getting started, and I’m looking forward to the work ahead.”

Lee earned his first Eastern Conference Coach of the Month award after the Hornets finished January with an 11-6 record and tied for the highest point differential on the road (+151) in any month in NBA history.

Earlier in the week, the Hornets announced that guard Brandon Miller underwent surgery to address left shoulder instability.

Expected to make a full recovery from an injury that cost him , Miller is expected to make a full recovery from an injury he suffered early in his third NBA season when he finished as a team-leader with 20.2 points per game while also averaging 4.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.0 steals and 30.3 minutes in 65 games (all starts) this season. His career-high 204 3-pointers helped the Hornets become the fourth team in NBA history with three players to make 200 ore more 3-pointers in a season; League-leaders Kon Knueppel and LaMelo Ball were the others.
