By Richard Walker

Football at Crest and Burns high schools was celebrated on Monday night at the 59th Cleveland County Sports Hall of Fame ceremony at Shelby’s City Park.

Crest coaches and players celebrate at the 2026 Cleveland County Sports Hall of Fame. From left to right, Roy Kirby, Tyrone “Dawson” Odums, MIke Stewart, Chris Coleman, Sid Bryson and Brandon Spikes.

On a night where ACC championship-winning quarterback Charlie Noggle of Shelby was the featured speaker, former Crest standouts Chris Coleman, Tyrone “Dawson” Odums and Brandon Spikes and former Burns standout Troy Goss were inducted.

Noggle, a 1962 Shelby High graduate, played in the 1961 Shrine Bowl and was a football captain at N.C. State when the Wolfpack won ACC titles in 1963, 1964 and 1965, including the last two years as starting quarterback.

“It’s a real pleasure to come to Shelby because it’s still my hometown,” Noggle said. “I was fortunate to play for five Cleveland County Sports Hall of Fame coaches when I was at Shelby High School.”

Before the ceremony began, several special awards were presented.

After more than 100 “Certificate of Merit Awards” were presented to Burns, Crest, Kings Mountain and Shelby athletes, Miley Beam (Burns), Landry Ohmstead (Crest), Sarah Eagle (Kings Mountain), Lan Farmer (Shelby) and T.K. Davis (Gardner-Webb) were presented “Honor Athlete Awards,” Gardner-Webb’s Brett Washburn was named “Fan of the Year,” and longtime Gardner-Webb athletic director Chuck Burch had recently served as the school’s interim athletic director was given the “Paris Yelton Memorial Award.”

The inductees were presented in alphabetical order by CCSHOF chairman Jim Corn.

And each of the inductees credited their local coaches with helping them be in a position to be named Hall of Famers.

Coleman, Odums and Spikes each played for many of the same coaches at Crest before going to greatness after leaving the area – Coleman and Spikes as college and the NFL players, Odums as a college player and Coleman and Odums as coaches.

Spikes, who is now working as director of player development at his college alma mater of Florida, was a two-time state champion at Crest while Odums was a part of coach Mike Stewart’s building process that helped Coleman help the Chargers to their first state championship in 1994.

“The pride and send of community was always here for me,” Spikes said.

Coleman, a 1995 Crest High graduate, was a standout receiver at N.C. State before becoming a special teams standout as the Chargers’ first active NFL player for the Tennessee Titans in the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

“I want to thank all of the coaches who helped me,” Coleman said in reference to his head coach Stewart and assistant coaches Sid Bryson and Roy Kirby when he played.

Odums, a 1992 Crest High graduate, played four sports at Crest before playing football at North Carolina Central and later coaching at Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, Clark-Atlanta, Bethune-Cookman, North Carolina A&T, Southern University and Norfolk State and three months ago began his tenure as Bowie State’s head coach.

“I’m so proud of where I came from because at Crest, we show up and show out,” said Odums, who considered Crest coaches and teachers like Stewart, Bryson, Kirby, John Taylor, Coleman Hunt, Ed Peeler, Suzanne Grayson and George Litton as influences in his career.

Goss, who was a four-sport standout at Burns before graduating in 2004, has been in active military service for 17 years – and after graduating from the Naval Academy where he was a football standout.

He credited his late mother Anne (who died in 2021) and his late Burns coach Ron Greene with teaching him traits that he used as an athlete and in the military.

“My mother would purposely put me uncomfortable positions,” Goss said. “At the time, I just didn’t like being uncomfortable but what she was teaching me was to have the courage to know how to do uncomfortable things.”

Goss said Greene’s football coaching one-liner “toe the line” is the same type of teaching he learned as a military officer.
