Football success will be the theme for the 2026 Cleveland County Sports Hall of Fame ceremony that will be held on May 18 at the Shelby City Park.

Former Crest High standouts Chris Coleman, Tyrone “Blue” Odoms and Brandon Spikes and former Burns High standout Troy Goss make up the 59th annual induction class.
And former Shelby High standout Charlie Noggle is the featured speaker.
Noggle, a 1963 Shelby High graduate, was a two-year starting quarterback at N.C. State in 1965 and 1966 that includes the first starter at Carter-Finley Stadium in 1966. A 2022 Cleveland County Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Noggle also was a 16th round draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 1967.
Coleman, a 1995 Crest High graduate, was a three-sport standout for the Chargers and the top receiver on the school’s 1994 N.C. 4A state championship team. After a standout four-year career at N.C. State as a wide receiver, Coleman played four years of professional football for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans (2000-02), NFL Europe Amsterdam Admirals (2001), Arena Football League Orlando Predators (2002-03) and CFL’s Montreal Alouettes (2003). After retiring from his playing days, he has coached collegiately for Lenoir-Rhyne and Southern University (as an assistant to Odoms), as an NFL intern for the St. Louis Rams and most recently for West Charlotte, where he helped that school win the 2024 N.C. 3A state title.
Goss, a 2003 Burns High graduate, was a three-sport standout for the Bulldogs who quarterbacked the school to the third round of the 2002 N.C. 3A football playoffs while accumulating 4,685 yards total offense and accounting for 43 touchdowns. A quarterback and wide receiver at the Naval Academy, Goss went on to greater fame while serving as a Marine Corps officer. He was a Commanding Officer of Bravo Company, 3rd Law Enforcement Battalion and III Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group and his role involved leading a company in policing, patrolling, and security operations in an expeditionary environment.

Odoms, a 1992 Crest High graduate, played quarterback and linebacker for the Chargers before becoming a team captain and earning All-CIAA honors as a defensive lineman at North Carolina Central. After college, Odoms began a coaching journey that has taken him to Crest, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, Clark-Atlanta, Bethune-Cookman, North Carolina A&T, Southern University, Norfolk State and Bowie State. He was interim head coach at Clark-Atlanta and head coach at Southern University and Norfolk State and, in February, he was hired as Bowie State head coach.
Spikes, a 2006 Crest High graduate, was a two-sport star who helped Crest to football state titles in 2003 and 2004 and to the basketball state championship game in 2005. A linebacker and fullback for the Chargers in 2003 and 2004, he was rated the state’s No. 1 college football prospect in 2005 and signed with the University of Florida where he became a three-time All-SEC performer and two-time All-American and national champion for the Gators. A second-round pick of the New England Patriots, Spikes played four seasons for that franchise and two for the Buffalo Bills. With New England, he was on four playoff teams, including the 2011-12 AFC championship team and two other AFC runner-up teams.
