The first major leaguer produced by Gastonia’s old Coastal Plain League Gastonia Grizzlies’ team will be inducted into his hometown Hall of Fame.

Tyler White, who also played for Gastonia American Legion Post 23, will be inducted into the 2026 Rutherford County Sports Hall of Fame on May 7 at the Foundation Performing Arts Center at Isothermal Community College at 6 p.m.
Doors open at 5:15 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online (www.Foundationshows.org) or at The Foundation Box Office for $30 each. A small service fee will be applied to online orders.
A 2009 Chase High graduate, White played for his father Brian when he was Post 23’s head coach in 2009 and became only the 3rd player in Gastonia’s storied history to hit .500; Only Matt Postell, a future N.C. State standout and minor leaguer, and Buddy Lewis, the former major leaguer for whom Sims Legion in Gastonia’s Lewis Field is named for, had previously hit .500 or better for Post 23.
Two summers later, in 2011, White hit .291 as the Grizzlies won their first Coastal Plain League championship.
At Western Carolina, after being named Southern Conference Player of the Year in 2013, he was a 33rd-round draft pick of the Houston Astros who progressed through their talented farm system to make his major league debut on opening day 2016 at New York’s Yankee Stadium.
It made him only the eighth Rutherford County product to make the major leagues.
A member of three minor league championship teams, White was on the roster for the 2017 Houston Astros’ World Series winner.
White played four major league seasons and also player professionally in the Korean Baseball League.
White is part of a talented induction class that includes women’s basketball standout Rachael Camp of East Rutherford, men’s basketball standout Dion Carson of R-S Central, former football standout Doug Padgett and coaching legend Jerry Cash of East Rutherford and Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy.
