Former East Lincoln softball standout Taliyah Thomas has been named preseason Big South Conference player of the year.
A senior at USC Upstate, Thomas becomes the 3rd Spartans player to be named that league’s preseason player of the year – and 4th overall.
The 2022 East Lincoln graduate enters her senior year after being named all-conference, NFCA 3rd team All-Region selection and the NCAA Division I Softball Statistical Champion for the Toughest Player to Strikeout in 2025 when she hit .373 with 14 doubles, 3 triples, 2 home runs, 32 RBIs, 57 runs scores and 32 stolen bases in 52 games (51 starts) as a right fielder.
Thomas received 11 points and 3 first-place votes in the Preseason Player of the Year balloting, just ahead of Radford’s Grace Bechtol (10 points, 2 first-place votes) and Longwood’s Sophia Knock (9 points, 1 first-place vote).
The 2026 softball season begins Thursday with the Big South’s 1st conference weekend March 13-15 and 2026 Big South tournament May 6-9 hosted by USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C.
Additionally, ESPNU recently announced today that the network will televise the Saturday, April 4 Gardner-Webb at USC Upstate softball game at 4 p.m. from Cyrill Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C The broadcast will be the series finale between the teams.

The Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday activated linebacker Chazz Surratt from the injured list to make him active for Sunday’s Super Bowl.
A 2016 East Lincoln High graduate, Surratt is a 5-year NFL veteran who has made 48 tackles in 52 games (5 starts). He hasn’t played since a 30-24 Seahawks’ win at Tennessee on Nov. 23.
