12-4-25 roundup: Pro football and basketball, College football and basketball, High school football and basketball, Middle school soccer, volleyball and wrestling, Auto racing

By Richard Walker

When Lincolnton beat visiting Shelby 35-34 in overtime on Oct. 10, it was one of the most thrilling outcomes of the season.

On Friday, the Southern Piedmont 2A/3A/4A Conference teams will meet again at the same place with more on the line.

Lincolnton’s 2025 Southern Piedmont Conference championship-winning football team

Lincolnton (11-2) will host again at Battleground Stadium/Von Ray Harris Field against Shelby (11-3), which has won 11 of its last 12 games with the only blemish being the Lincolnton loss.

Lincolnton is hosting its 1st regional final since 2011 and the 5th all-time; The Wolves also hosted regional finals in 1993, 1994, 2005 and 2007 – and Lincolnton is 5-0 in those games.

It’s the 7th meeting in postseason play between the schools – dating to a 1923 open state playoff meeting held in Gastonia; Shelby is 5-1 in the previous contests with Lincolnton’s 28-27 Western 2A semifinal at Shelby the Wolves’ lone win.

Lincolnton also is trying to do something rare in Shelby’s rich football history in which the Golden Lions have more documented wins (876 entering Friday) than any other school in state history.

Shelby has met a team it has played in the regular season 27 times in postseason play. And only 4 times has a team that beat the Golden Lions in the regular season also won in the playoffs – the last time came in 2022 when Burns followed up a 27-14 regular season victory with a 42-0 playoff win.

The other 3 sweeps came in ancient times – in 1925 (by old Gastonia High), 1957 (old Marion High) and 1958 (Hickory).

And 4 times in the last 52 seasons Shelby has won in the playoffs after losing in the regular season – 1974, 1993 and 2017 against South Point and 2005 against East Rutherford.

Even with Lincolnton’s win earlier this season, the Wolves trail their oldest rival by a 48-17-4 margin; Shelby beat Lincolnton 68-0 on Nov. 4, 1921 in the Wolves’ first-ever game.
