A pair of top area athletes have recently made college commitments as former Lincolnton High basketball star L.J. Smith IV committed to Ohio State on Oct. 20 and Ashbrook senior football star Caleb Gordon committed to West Virginia on Monday.
A 6-foot-4, 180-pound forward, Smith is a 4-star recruit by 247sports.com and ranked No. 28 among Class of 2027 players in the country and was No. 3 in North Carolina before transferring for his junior season at Oak Hill, Va., Academy. He’s No. 10 in ESPN rankings and No. 64 in On3/Rivals rankings.
Smith last season scored a Lincoln County record 960 points season and his 1,851 career points is 2 years for the Wolves is No. 1 all time in Lincolnton history. He recently surpassed 2,000 career points in high school.
He picked Ohio State over Indiana, Kansas, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas among others.
A 6-foot, 217-pound linebacker, Gordon is considered the No. 20-ranked senior prospect in North Carolina and also had received offers from Virginia, North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, West Virginia and others.
He committed to Arkansas in June but decommitted after the Razorbacks fired head coach Sam Pittman.
