Minnesota used a dominating 2nd quarter to defeat Virginia Tech 24-10 on Friday at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium on Friday in the 23rd annual Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
The win improved the Gophers to 8-5 for the season while also increasing the program’s bowl winning streak to eight.
Max Brosmer (211 yards passing, 1 TD) and Darius Taylor (113 yards rushing, 1 TD run, 1 TD pass) led Minnesota, which outgained the Hokies 403-223.
The loss marks Virginia Tech’s 5th bowl loss in its last 7 games, ended its season with a 6-7 overall record and completed a dismal ACC bowl season.
The conference finished with a 2-11 overall bowl record and is now 10-13 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
The game drew a crowd of 31,027.

Carolina Panthers right guard Robert Hunt has been announced as the 2024 winner of the Tom Berry Good Guy Award, which annually honors the Panthers player who was most helpful to the media.
Hunt joins D.J. Chark and Teddy Bridgewater as the only players to win the award in their 1st seasons with the Panthers.
The award is presented by the Carolinas chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America and named for a longtime columnist and Panthers beat writer for the High Point Enterprise, who died at the start of the 2009 season.
Hunt, 28, has started the 1st 16 games of a rebuilt offensive line after signing a 5-year contract with the Panthers last March after spending 4 seasons with Miami Dolphins after he was that franchise’s 2nd round pick in the 2020 draft out of Louisiana.
PFWA members said they appreciated Hunt’s candor, humor and the fact that he was always accessible, regardless of the outcome of the game.
