Nowadays, we just take for granted that the NCAA tournament will make periodic appearances in Charlotte.
Before the original Charlotte Coliseum was opened in 1955, no NCAA tournament games had been played in the city.
Until the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets came to the city in 1988, the longest gap between NCAA tournament appearances was a mere 12 years as the venue hosted the East Regional in 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1973 and opening round games in 1975, 1976, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1987.
Locally, the opening round of North Carolina’s 1982 title run may be the most well remembered – if for no other reason than it provided the Tar Heels’ biggest scare until its 63-62 victory in the NCAA championship game in New Orleans.
In Charlotte, North Carolina’s James Worthy of Gastonia had a three-point play and drew a charge in the final minute of a 52-50 win over a James Madison team that eliminated Ohio State 55-48 two days earlier. Future Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame coaches Dean Smith and Roy Williams and players Worthy and Michael Jordan were with the Tar Heels that season.
Other future Hall of Famers were regular visitors to Charlotte for NCAA games at the old Coliseum.
From 1958 to 1960, Hall of Famers Guy Rodgers of Temple, Jerry West of West Virginia and Tom “Satch” Sanders of New York University led their teams to East Regional titles.
In the 1961 and 1973 East Regionals, future Hall of Famer coaches guided their teams past ACC schools to win regional titles – Jack Ramsay for St. Joseph’s in 1961 and Dave Gavitt for Providence in 1973.
The 1984, 1986 and 1987 opening round games mark the last three times the old Coliseum hosted NCAA events.
Each had marquee talent and/or local storylines.
In 1984, No. 1-ranked North Carolina coached by Dean Smith and with future NBA stars Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty and Kenny Smith beat a Temple team coached by John Chaney and Richmond upset Auburn with future NBA star Charles Barkley playing his final game before the Spiders lost to Indiana and Hall of Fame coach Bobby Knight.
In 1986, Davidson and former Kings Mountain High and Belmont Abbey coach Bobby Hussey guided the Wildcats to their first NCAA tournament since 1970.
And in 1987, future Hall of Famer David Robinson went for 50 points and 13 rebounds in his final college game as Michigan (with future Charlotte Hornets’ NBA All-Star Glen Rice) eliminated Navy 109-97.
