1-15-26 roundup: Pro football, baseball and basketball, College football and basketball, High school basketball and football
By Richard Walker
For years, high school football historians have known Shelby had the most documented victories in the state’s long history playing the sport.
But through years of record-keeping, emails to sportswriters, school historians and longtime observers and microfilm research, www.CarolinasSportsHub.com has come up with a list of the schools that have 500 or more documented victories as well as several schools that are closing in that milestone.
Fifty-three schools have 500 or more documented victories with Shelby (878), Reidsville (854) and Mount Airy (815) the top three schools with 800 or more wins.
Four other schools have 700 or more wins, 13 with 600 or more (including Lincolnton) and 33 with 500 or more (including Kings Mountain).
Meanwhile, 11 other schools are closing in on 500 victories among them Crest and South Point.
Richmond County, which didn’t open until 1972, is the quickest to reach 500 wins as it did so in its 53rd season in 2024.
By comparison, Shelby took its 500th documented win – a 10-7 first round playoff win at East Lincoln on Nov. 13, 1993 – in the Golden Lions’ 80th season of football.
Crest (opened in 1967) and South Point (1969) are a bit older than Richmond County but are closing in on the 500-win milestone with 487 and 469 victories, respectively.
Here are the winningest document high school football winners in N.C. history (To add, update and/or correct current records, please email [email protected]):
