Five Gaston and Lincoln county teams remain alive in the N.C. High School Athletic Association baseball playoffs that move into the second round on Thursday night.
In Class 2A, East Lincoln will host Thomasville Ledford and South Point will visit R-S Central.
And in Class 1A, Mountain Island Charter will visit Hayesville, Lincoln Charter will host North Moore and Cherryville will visit East Surry.

Legion baseball
Cherryville 6, Hickory 2: Noah Ingle went six innings with 11 strikeouts and reliever Zach Wilson struck out one in the seventh inning. Wilson also led the Post 100 offense with two hits and two RBIs. Samuel Duncan added one hit, three runs and two stolen bases for Cherryville (2-1, 1-0), which was playing its Area IV Western Division opener.
Junior Legion baseball
Cherryville 13, Cramer 7: Cherryville improved to 3-0 on the season with the home victory.
College baseball
First round pairings have been set for the upcoming College World Series in Omaha, Neb., where N.C. State will be making its third appearance in the event; The Wolfpack previously advanced to the CWS in 1968 and 2013.

The Gastonia Honey Hunters were dropped to 8-8 on the season after losing 13-3 to visiting Southern Maryland on Wednesday night.
Gastonia (8-8) plays the third and final game of a three-game home series against Southern Maryland on Thursday at 6:50 p.m.
