Shelby Middle School finished off an unbeaten football championship as the Blue Devils defeated East Rutherford 42-6 Wednesday afternoon at Shelby’s High’s Blanton Stadium.
Shelby won its seventh Tri-County Conference championship game and first since 2014.
The Blue Devils of coach Justin Bowden got touchdowns from Tristan Tate, Jaylen Tate, Khalil Foster and Stephon Jennings and interceptions from Calvin Ramseur and Derrick Kee.
Shelby’s Tri-County championship game victories have come in 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2014 and in the first-ever 2021 winter/spring season. The 2002 title came in the first year of the league title game.
College basketball
A pair of local products for Catawba Valley Community College were honored by Region X – former Piedmont Community Charter standout Jaylen Prioleau and former Forestview standout Kenzley Dunlap.
Prioleau, a 2019 Piedmont Community Charter School, was named second team all-region team after averaging 9.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game this season for the Red Hawks, who finished 13-7 after losing in the semifinals of the South Atlantic district tournament.
Dunlap, a 2020 Forestview High graduate, received Academic all-region honors. In order to be eligible for the honor, players had to possess a 3.7 GPA after one semester of classes or a 3.6 GPA after two or more semesters.
