Wednesday’s roundup: Local connection to S.C. prep history, prep basketball and soccer results, golf winner and college basketball

A pair of former Cramerton Middle School and South Point High basketball standouts have helped York, S.C., Prep Charter School to the school’s first-ever state playoff appearance.

Kendall Davis and Kory Davis, who played for Cramerton in 2017 and 2018 and at South Point in the 2018-19 season, are junior guards for the Patriots.
Their father Larry Davis, a former University of North Carolina and University of South Carolina basketball standout, coaches York Prep. The Patriots are 18-4 overall and 11-0 in Class 2A Region 4 this season entering Monday’s first round S.C. High School League state playoff game.
Kendall and Kory led Cramerton to a 12-0 record and the 2018 Gaston County Middle School title before helping South Point to a 15-12 record and the second round of the N.C. 2A playoffs as freshmen in the 2018-19 season.
High school boys basketball
Cherryville 64, Piedmont Charter 41: Austin Thompson (20 points, 8 rebounds), Lavonte Hughes (12 points, 10 assists), Carson Kelly (9 points) and Noah Abernethy (5 points) led Cherryville to the non-conference win over its Southern Piedmont 1A rival.
Thomas Jefferson 58, Bessemer City 50
East Gaston 65, East Rutherford 52 (Tuesday): Trent Sherrill (19 points, 14 rebounds) and Caleb Burr (15 points, 9 rebounds) led the Warriors to the Southwestern 2A Conference victory.
High school girls basketball
Thomas Jefferson 51, Bessemer City 37
North Lincoln 36, LIncolnton 35 (Tuesday): Ashlyn White had 23 points for North Lincoln and Emma Rhyne had 17 for Lincolnton.

High school golf
Shelby High senior Connor Brown last weekend won the 54-hole Kings and Prince tournament at Simons Island, Ga., by 10 shots on the Hurricane-Faldo Junior Golf series.
A UNC-Greensboro commitment, Brown is currently ranked No. 3 in the country in the Hurricane-Faldo Junior Golf series. Brown, who lives in Cherryville, has 1,775 points; The tour leader Zachary Loninger of Crosswicks, N.J., has 2,825 points.
High school boys soccer
Forestview 10, Crest 1: Tyler McMurray had four goals, Nicholas Shiles two and Anthony Aguilar, Jaden Johnson, Johan Tabora and Parker Hope had one goal apiece for the 6-0 Jaguars.
East Lincoln 5, Lake Norman Charter 1: Blake Swanson scored twice and Chase Lynch, Luke Felts and Landon Graden each had one goal apiece for East Lincoln (6-0), which hosts Newton-Conover on Friday. Swanson also had three assists and Graden two.

Forestview 3, Cramer 2 (Tuesday): Nicholas Shiles, Johan Tabora and Anthony Aguilar scored goals for unbeaten Forestview (5-0).
College men’s basketball
Gardner-Webb 69, Radford 57: Jaheam Cornwall scored a game-high 20 points, including several clutch baskets late in the second half, as Gardner-Webb (9-14, 8-10) snapped a three-game losing streak with the Big South Conference road victory. The Runnin’ Bulldogs, who play at Radford again at 6 p.m. on Thursday, also got 18 points from Jacob Falko and 10 points, six rebounds and four blocks from freshman Jamaine Mann.
College women’s basketball
Charlotte 49ers schedule change: Charlotte’s two-game series at UTSA this weekend is adjusting by a day due to inclement weather in the San Antonio region. The two teams now will tip-off at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
