Wednesday’s roundup: High school soccer, college softball, college basketball tournament pairings and results
By Richard Walker

South Point High’s boys soccer team won 2-0 at Chase on Wednesday and has a chance to wrap up its first conference title since 1998 with another win over Chase on Thursday.
A win also would give the Red Raiders (10-3, 10-1) the No. 1 2A playoff berth for the Southwestern 2A Conference by virtue of a 4-2 penalty kick victory over Shelby last week. Shelby and South Point split their regular season matchups with South Point’s win at Shelby on Feb. 10 ending Shelby’s 42-match unbeaten streak.
In other high school soccer action on Wednesday:
Lincoln Charter 7, Bessemer City 0
Christ the King 4, Cherryville 0
Newton-Conover 3, East Lincoln 2: Conner Dallin scored his first career goal off a Jason Gonzalez assist and Luke Felts later scored off a a Chase Lynch free kick assist for East Lincoln. But Newton-Conover scored the game-winning goal with approximately 10 minutes to play to hand the Mustangs their first regular season loss since Oct. 24, 2018. East Lincoln (10-1-1) had already clinched the South Fork 2A Conference championship.
