Gastonia’s Harold Varner III tees off at 12:32 p.m. Thursday on the first hole tee as he tries to improve on what has so far been his best year on the PGA tour.

A 2008 Forestview High graduate and former East Carolina University standout, Varner is current ranked 56th in the FedEx standings, 56th among PGA money leaders and 81st in the World Golf Rankings.

Each ranking would be the best of his career.

In 16 events this season, Varner has one top 10 finish and six top 25 finishes highlighted by the best finish of his career from April 15-18 in the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head, S.C., when Varner finished as tournament runner-up.
