Thirteen players and two coaches highlight the area’s professional baseball players for the 2021 season.
Last month, former Gardner-Webb and Belmont Abbey standout Emilio Pagan and former South Point and Appalachian State standout Jeffrey Springs began their seasons as pitchers for the San Diego Padres and Tampa Bay Rays, respectively, in the major leagues.
Entering Wednesday, Pagan was 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 14 appearances and Springs was 2-0 with one save and a 3.55 ERA in 12 appearances.
The major league’s minor league system began play on Tuesday.
Two former local standouts are Class AAA managers as former Ashbrook standout Wes Helms manages the Charlotte Knights and former Gardner-Webb standout Blake Lalli manages the Reno Aces. The Knights are a Chicago White Sox affiliate and the Aces are an Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate.
Playing in Class AAA are former Gastonia American Legion Post 23 standout Tyler White is with the Buffalo Bison of the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
Playing in Class AA are former Gardner-Webb standout Mason Fox of the San Antonio Missions of the San Diego Padres organization.
Playing in Class A are former Kings Mountain and N.C. State standout Will Wilson is with the Eugene Emeralds of the San Francisco Giants organization, former East Lincoln and East Carolina standout Alec Burleson and former Gardner-Webb standout Chandler Redmond are with the Peoria Chiefs of the St. Louis Cardinals organization, former South Point standout Garrett Davila is with the Quad Cities Bandits of the Kansas City Royals organization, former Hunter Huss standout Andrew Jordan is with the Dayton Dragons of the Cincinnati Reds organization, former Burns and Duke standout Christopher Proctor is with the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Detroit Tigers organization and former North Gaston and UNC-Asheville standout Blake Brown is with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws of the Philadelphia Phillies organization.
And two former local standouts are on the roster of the first-year Gastonia Honey Hunters of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball that begins their season later this month – former North Gaston and N.C. State standout Jake Buchanan and former Forestview and North Carolina standout Reilly Hovis.
High school softball
Lincoln Charter’s Anna Grace Terrell was named Southern Piedmont 1A Conference player of the year and Cherryville’s A.J. Henley was named coach of the year in voting by league coaches.
Henley had a double lung transplant in January and has been rehabilitating in Chapel Hill and missed the season.

When the Wells Fargo Championship gets underway on Thursday at Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte, Gastonia’s Harold Varner III will be teeing off at 12:32 p.m. from the first tee.
A 2008 Forestview High graduate and former East Carolina University standout, Varner is current ranked 56th in the FedEx standings, 56th among PGA money leaders and 81st in the World Golf Rankings.

South Point’s Ayden Baker has signed to play basketball at North Greenville University, which participates in Conference Carolinas.
