6-15-21 roundup: Prep baseball, College baseball, Legion baseball and Pro baseball

Cherryville scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a dramatic 6-5 win over Pine Lake Prep in the opening round of the N.C. 1A high school baseball playoffs.

Cherryville was one of five local winners in Tuesday’s opening round; East Lincoln and South Point won in Class 2A and Mountain Island Charter and Lincoln Charter won in Class 1A.

Cherryville fell behind 3-2 in the third inning and 5-2 in the top of the fourth before rallying with one run in the fourth and its game-winning three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Christian Hahn’s two-run single tied the score, then Hahn scored on Ty Heavner’s RBI single as the No. 7 Ironmen (14-1) advance to play at No. 2 East Surry on Thursday.

The other results:

North Henderson 6, Crest 1: The visiting Knights (11-4) scored five times in the sixth inning to erase a 3-1 Crest lead and end the Chargers’ season at 12-1.

Concord Cox Mill 9, Kings Mountain 4: Visiting Cox Mill scored five times in the ninth inning to eliminate Kings Mountain (11-4).

East Lincoln 5, West Stokes 4: The Mustangs won on the road to improve to 14-1 and will host No. 16 seed Thomasville Ledford 7-5 on Thursday. Ledford won 7-5 at No. 1 seed North Davidson on Tuesday.

South Point 7, Canton Pisgah 2: The Red Raiders (11-4) won at No. 3 seed Pisgah and advance to Thursday’s second round at Southwestern 2A league rival R-S Central.

R-S Central 3, North Lincoln 1: The Hilltoppers scored three times in the fifth after North Lincoln (11-4) had led 1-0 since the the third inning.

Mountain Island Charter 3, North Stanly 2: Starter Tyler Crowe went six innings, reliever Ethan Suchenski pitched a scoreless seventh inning and Cole Hart had three hits (two doubles) and Jake Barber had a RBI as Raptors (11-2) advanced to Thursday’s game at No. 1 seed Hayesville.

Lincoln Charter 6, Greensboro Cornerstone Charter 0: Davis Al-Hussaini and Mason Smith hit home run to power the Eagles (14-1) to a win and a Thursday home game against No. 13 North Moore.

North Gaston’s Anastazia Rodriquez has signed a National Letter of Intent to run Cross Country at Cleveland Community College.

 

College baseball

First round pairings have been set for the upcoming College World Series in Omaha, Neb., where N.C. State will be making its third appearance in the event; The Wolfpack previously advanced to the CWS in 1968 and 2013.

Gaston Braves 10, Queen City 2: Caleb Burr, Drew Wofford and Parker Agosta had two hits apiece and starter Ethan Simmons and relievers Cameron Cook, Keelan Helms and Agosta combined on a two-hitter as the Braves won their season-opener.

 

 

 

Pro baseball

The Gastonia Honey Hunters moved back over .500 with a 5-3 home win over Southern Maryland on Tuesday.

Gastonia (8-7) plays the second game of a three-game home series against Southern Maryland on Wednesday at 6:50 p.m.
