The Lady Crusaders of coach Jason Gault finished their three rounds with a cumulative total of 941 (304-314-323) that also earned the program automatic qualification to the NCAA Division II Women’s South Regional May 3 to 5.

The Abbey previously has won league titles in 2007, 2010 and 2011.

Three Lady Crusaders finished in the top 10 to earn all-league honors; Jenna Nagy finished second overall and YenXuan Ong and Morgan Comer tied for sixth. Other scorers for the Abbey were Hannah Bailey (tied for 14th) and Lauren Denhard (tied for 30th).

College basketball

In a unusual twist, Western Carolina announced the hiring of Justin Gray as its new head men’s basketball coach on Tuesday.

Gray replaces Mark Prosser as Catamounts’ head coach; Prosser was hired as Winthrop’s new coach earlier this month after Pat Kelsey left Winthrop for the head coaching job at College of Charleston.

Gray had served on Kelsey’s staff the past two seasons. Gray previously served as the Director of Basketball Development at his collegiate alma mater of Wake Forest following a 12-year professional career overseas.

A 2002 graduate of the prestigious Oak Hill, Va., Academy, Gray played his first three season of high school basketball at West Charlotte. During his four-year career at Wake Forest that started with him playing alongside NBA All-Star Chris Paul, Gray was a three-time All-ACC selection and had 1,946 career points and 319 3-pointers.

At Winthrop, Gray helped the Eagles to 47 wins the past two seasons and two Big South Conference titles.
