Tuesday’s roundup: College football and baseball, High school football, girls soccer and softball

Gardner-Webb’s Devron Harper and Ty French took major honors on Big South Conference postseason football awards and five other Bulldogs players were honored.

Harper, a sophomore from Conyers, Ga., was named special teams player of the year and earned all-league honors at three different positions; He was named 1st team kickoff return specialist, 1st team punt return specialist and second team wide receiver. French, a freshman from Moultrie, Ga., was the league’s defensive freshman of the year in addition to earning all-league honors on the defensive line.

Harper led the nation with two punt return touchdowns and was among the national leaders with 18.2 yards per punt return and 28.8 yards per kickoff return. His punt return touchdowns came against Elon (41 yards) and a league-record 93-yard return against Monmouth. Overall, Harper had 290 return yards (146 punt returns, 144 kickoff returns) on 13 returns for a 22.3 average.

French had a team-high 35 tackles (14 solo, 21 assisted) with eight tackles for a loss (including four sacks), 10 quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick.

Also earning honors were first team wide receiver Izaiah Gathings, first team running back Narii Gaither, second team offensive lineman Clayton Frady, second team defensive back A.J. Thomas and all-academic honoree Will Mullins, the team’s long snapper.

West Lincoln 4, East Lincoln 2: Amelia May’s two-run single in the bottom of the sixth was the difference West Lincoln (7-4) knocked off previously unbeaten East Lincoln (10-1). Taliyah Thomas (1 single, 1 run, 1 stolen base), Katelynn Crowe (1 single, 1 stolen base), Betsy Eatmon (2 singles, 1 RBI), Katie Hogue (1 single, 2 walks, 1 stolen base), Jaelyn Freeston (1 single, 1 stolen base), Bailey Hardin (2 singles, 1 stolen base) and Tori Venters (1 single) led East Lincoln’s offense.
