Thursday’s roundup: NC prep baseball history set, College women’s volleyball, High school football, softball and girls soccer
By Richard Walker
Carlos Rodon became the 10th N.C. high school player to throw a major league no-hitter when he pitched the Chicago White Sox to an 8-0 win over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night.
Rodon (Holly Springs High School) joins Ernie Shore (East Bend Guilford Prep), Wes Ferrell (Guilford), Hoyt Wilhelm (Cornelius), Don Cardwell (Winston-Salem Gray), Jim Hunter (Perquimans County), Gaylord Perry (Williamston), Jim Bibby (Franklinton Albion-Person), Tommy Greene (Whiteville) and Kevin Millwood (Bessemer City) as N.C. high school alumni to throw no-hitters – and Millwood had two no-hitters.
Wilhelm (Mecklenburg County), Cardwell (Winston-Salem), Hunter (Ahoskie), Perry (Williamston), Greene (Whiteville) and Millwood (Bessemer City) also played American Legion baseball in this state.
Additionally, Shore (Guilford), Cardwell (Appalachian State), Bibby (Fayetteville State) and Rodon (N.C. State) played collegiately; Perry attended Campbell but never played for the Camels.
And Rodon, who led Holly Springs to the 2011 N.C. 4A state title and N.C. State to the 2013 College World Series, also made 12 starts for the Class AAA Charlotte Knights in five seasons from 2014 to 2018.
North Carolina’s first no-hitter came by accident as Shore relieved the iconic Babe Ruth after Ruth was ejected for arguing balls on strikes following a game-opening walk on June 23, 1917. Shore relieved, that baserunner was erased trying to steal second base, and he retired the next 26 batters in order as the Boston Red Sox beat the Washington Senators 4-0.
The Cleveland Indians’ Ferrell no-hit the St. Louis Browns on April 29, 1931.
The Baltimore Orioles’ Wilhelm no-hit the eventual World Series champion New York Yankees on Sept. 20, 1958.
The Chicago Cubs’ Cardwell no-hit the St. Louis Cardinals on May 16, 1960 – or two days after he’d been traded by the Philadelphia Phillies to the Cubs.
The Oakland A’s Hunter not only no-hit the Minnesota Twins but he threw a perfect game on May 8, 1968.
The San Francisco Giants’ Perry no-hit the eventual National League champion St. Louis Cardinals on Sept. 17, 1968.
The Texas Rangers’ Bibby no-hit the eventual World Series champion Oakland A’s on July 30, 1973.
The Philadelphia Phillies’ Greene no-hit the Montreal Expos 2-0 on May 23, 1991.
And Millwood had no-hitters for two teams, first pitching a 1-0 Philadelphia Phillies’ win over the San Francisco Giants on April 27, 1993 and later going the first six innings for the Seattle Mariners in a 1-0 no-hit win over the Los Angeles Dodgers that was finished off by five relievers.
College women’s volleyball
Catawba Valley Community College finished in eighth place on Thursday in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II national tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The sixth-seeded Red Hawks fell to host Kirkwood in straight sets (15-25, 22-25, 19-25) to finish with a 21-5 overall record.
The school’s best previous finish was fourth in 2016.
The roster is comprised almost completely with former prep standouts, among them 2020 Highland Tech graduate Isabella Richard.
Other players on the roster are Danielle Moss (West Stanly), Aasia McNeill (Statesville), Amber Barker (home school from Gold Hill), Caitlin Dailey (R-S Central), Carter Gibson (Canton Pisgah), Lilly Weaver (South Stokes), Abbey Smith (Maiden), Kennya Spikes (Atlanta, Ga., Roswell), Kenley Killian (St. Stephens) and Delaney Conner (Hickory Christian Academy).
