Thursday’s roundup: Mountain Island Charter and Highland Tech clash in playoffs and high school basketball standings

Mountain Island Charter advanced to the Western N.C. 1A volleyball semifinals for the second straight year after sweeping past Highland Tech Thursday night in a battle of unbeaten teams.

The Raptors (16-0) downed Highland Tech by scores of 25-14, 25-18, 25-16 to advance to Saturday’s Western N.C. semifinals. The top-seeded team in the Western bracket, Mountain Island Charter will host Alleghany County.

The PAC 7 Conference champion Raptors swept Alleghany 3-0 last season to advance to the Western N.C. semifinals.

Highland Tech won its first Southern Piedmont 1A Conference title and saw its season end with a 12-1 record.

South Point 66, East Rutherford 40: Ayden Baker scored 29 points and Garret Hunt 11 as the Red Raiders improved to 3-0. South Point’s next game is Tuesday at R-S Central.
