South Point High’s boys soccer team clinched its first league title since 1998 with a 5-1 home win over Chase on Thursday night for the Southwestern 2A championship.

The Red Raiders finished with an 11-1 league record and 11-3 overall record. South Point tied Shelby for league honors but the Red Raiders won 4-2 on penalty kicks the last time the two teams played in case a tiebreaker was needed to determine the No. 1 playoff seeding.

College athletics

Belmont Abbey College women’s basketball player Maria Kuhlman has been chosen as the winner of the prestigious 2020-21 Conference Carolinas Murphy Osborne Award.

A senior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Kuhlman owns a 3.99 grade-point average as a Theology major at Belmont Abbey. She also is minoring in Psychology and Sport Management.

On the court, Kuhlman is a four-time all-conference selection, a 1,000-point career scorer and currently leading the Lady Crusaders as a No. 1 seed into this weekend’s Southeast Regional tournament in Jefferson City, Tenn.

Kuhlman has been strong in the community during her time at Belmont Abbey. A member of the Psychology Club and FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students), Kuhlman is also serving as a compliance intern with the athletic department this semester. In addition, Kuhlman has volunteered at the Charlotte Samaritan House (short term recuperative care for the homeless) and at Mount Hollyween, which is a community event on Halloween in Mount Holly, North Carolina.

The Murphy Osborne Award is Conference Carolinas’ Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete Award.

Kuhlman is the Abbey’s first winner of the award since women’s soccer player Megan Nanney in the 2015-16 school year.
