East Lincoln advanced to the N.C. 2A quarterfinals for a third straight season with a 4-1 second round playoff win over visiting Salisbury on Thursday.

The Mustangs (12-1-1) will play the winner of the Hibriten-Hendersonville second round match on Saturday. If Hibriten wins, the game would be at Hibriten. If Hendersonville wins, the game would be at East Lincoln.

In Thursday’s East Lincoln victory, Christopher Mileta scored twice and Luke Felts and Landon Graden had one goal apiece for the Mustangs. Helmut Rojas had two assists and Graden and Blake Swanson had one each.

The Shelby at Foard 2A second round match and Cramer at Weddington 3A second match were both postponed to Friday at 4:30 p.m.

High school basketball

Shelby’s girls basketball coach and two of its players were named to the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association all-state teams.

Scooter Lawrence was named coach of the year, Maraja Pass was a first team selection and Kate Hollifield was a third team selection.

University of South Carolina signee Saniya Rivers of Wilmington Ashley was named girls player of the year.

No local boys players were honored; N.C. 3A state champion Weddington’s Gary Ellington was named coach of the year and N.C. 2A champion Terquavion Smith of state champion, a N.C. State signee, was named player of the year.

Burns 6, Chase 4 (Wednesday): Winning pitcher Sayge Strange pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and Maura Pendleton (3-4, 3 stolen bases), Jaycee Bivins (1-3, double, 2 RBIs), Peyton Cook (1-2, double, 2 RBIs), Hunter Morgan (1-3, double, RBI) and Esynce Howze (1-3, stolen base) led Burns to the victory.

Middle school boys soccer

Belmont 5, W.C. Friday 0 (Wednesday): Zeke Pruitt had two goals, Patrick Blee, Ty Cunningham and Brandon Cunningham scored one each and Luke Wesolowski recorded the goalkeeping shutout for the Wildcats (1-0), who host Stanley on Monday.
