Thursday’s roundup: Gardner-Webb plays Hampton in Big South games, 49ers prepare for Conference USA back-to-back

Jacob Falko scored 22 points Thursday afternoon as Gardner-Webb won 80-68 at Hampton to take its first Big South Conference victory of the season.
A junior college transfer from Cecil, Md., College, Falko scored 20 points in the first half for the Runnin’ Bulldogs (2-5, 1-1), who also got 17 points and six assists from Jaheam Cornwall and 13 points and three rebounds from Kareem Reid.
Gardner-Webb returns home for its next Big South games and will host Charleston Southern on Monday at 6 p.m. and Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Charlotte opens Conference USA: The 49ers begin their league schedule with two games against Western Kentucky in Halton Arena on Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. Charlotte (4-3) enters its league slate on a three-game winning streak after roads wins at Atlantic 10 foes Davidson and George Washington and a win in Halton Arena over North Carolina A&T.

Hampton 46, Gardner-Webb 38: Gardner-Webb made just 20 percent of its field goal attempts as it fell to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in Big South play against the visiting Pirates (2-7, 2-2).
Alasia Smith (9 points, 10 rebounds) and Gabrielle Caponegro (8 points, 10 rebounds) led the Bulldogs, who play again Monday and Tuesday at Charleston Southern.
