Thursday’s roundup: Former East Lincoln star gets postseason invitation and high school volleyball and cross country results

A look at the local sports roundup for Thursday, November 19:

College football
Former East Lincoln High standout Chazz Surratt has been been invited along with another University of North Carolina teammate to the Senior Bowl on Jan. 30, 2021 in Mobile, Alabama.

Chazz Surratt

A 2016 East Lincoln High graduate and linebacker for the Tar Heels, Surratt is leading UNC in tackles (68) and sacks (5.0) and has made 6 1-2 tackles for loss. He’s also been named ACC Linebacker of the Week twice this season and was the Chuck Bednarik Award national defensive player of the week after the 31-6 season-opening home win over Syracuse.

Joining Surratt in being invited to play in Mobile from UNC will be senior running back Michael Carter.

Top NFL scouts from each team will be present at practice sessions and the game and those invited are considered to be the top prospects at their respective positions for the NFL Draft in April.

High school volleyball

Forestview 3, Ashbrook 1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-9): Lily Harmon (12 aces, 5 kills, 25 assists), Emma Davis (9 kills, 2 aces), Anna Townsend (8 kills, 8 digs) and Kya Edwards (12 digs) led Forestview (1-1), which hosts North Gaston on Monday.
Forestview also won the JV match by a 25-8, 25-7 score.

Crest 3, Cramer 0

R-S Central 3, Shelby 0

South Point 3, East Gaston 0: Anna Dunbar and Chloe Ratliff (14 Kills Each), Kailee McAlister (19 Digs) and Emily Revels (33 assists) led South Point, which plays at Stuart Cramer on Monday and hosts East Rutherford on Tuesday.
East Gaston won the JV match two sets to one.

East Lincoln 3, Lincolnton 0 (25-5, 25-3, 25-9): Jordan Gromlich (12 kills), Kaylee Spees (14 digs), Katie Cook (5 aces, 11 assists) and Peyton Crates (13 assists) led East Lincoln.
East Lincoln also won the JV match by a 25-21, 25-18 score.

Maiden 3, West Lincoln 0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-12)

Cherryville 3, Bessemer City 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-12): Addie Eaker and Katie Eaker (5 kills each) and Rileigh Kiser (4 aces, 12 assists, 10 digs) led Cherryville (1-1, 1-0).

Highland Tech 3, Lincoln Charter 1 (25-21, 21-25, 26-24, 25-17)

Mountain Island Charter 3, Community School of Davidson 1 (27-25, 20-25, 25-11, 25-20)

Kings Mountain 3, Stuart Cramer 0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-12 – on Wednesday): Kyann Crocker (8 digs, 8 assists, 4 serve receptions, 13 service points), Ashlyn Wood (11 service points, 11 assists, 12 digs), Aaliyah Byers (16 service points, 12 kills, 9 service points, 3 digs), Paige Bagwell (8 service points, 11 assists) and Meile (10 kills, 5 digs) led the Mountaineers.
Kings Mountain also won the JV match by a 25-17, 25-15 score and was led by Austyn Dixon (6 kills), Addi Peeler (7 serve receptions, 4 digs, 9 service points), Jessie Ozmore (9 assists, 5 service points) and Caroline Barber (9 serve receptions, 5 digs).

High school cross country

Stuart Cramer 32, Forestview 34, Ashbrook 68, Hunter Huss 103 (Tuesday): Stuart Cramer scorers were 1st place Zach Willer, 3rd place Nick Willer, 5th place Jacob Wooten, 7th place Luke Auten and 16th place Jordan Granados. Forestview scorers were 2nd place Austin Brotemarkle, 4th place Oussama Ajala, 8th place Jose Acuna, 9th place Aaron Floyd and 11th place Even Shiflet. Ashbrook scorers ere 6th place Michael Gates, 10th place Anthony Varriale, 15th place Zach Laxton, 18th place Wesley Gates and 19th place John Ledbetter. And Huss scorers were 13th place Ben Kimmer, 21st place Kevin Montalban, 22nd place Elisha Grant, 23rd place Robin Martinez and 24th place Gary Clark.
Stuart Cramer’s Zach Willer ran a new course record 16:01. Forestview’s Brotemarkle (16:03) and Cramer’s Nick Willer (16:15) also bested the previous record of 16:22.
Next Tuesday at Ashbrook, the Green Wave will host a league meet that includes Forestview, North Gaston and Stuart Cramer.
