Thrillers cap Carolinas high school basketball state championship Saturdays

By Richard Walker

Charlotte’s Ardrey Kell High School finished the 2021 season as N.C. 4A runner-up after a heartbreaking overtime loss.

Thrillers ended the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and South Carolina High School League basketball championships on Saturday.

In the NCHSAA 4A championship game, Raleigh Millbrook got late-game heroics from Silas Demary to knock off Charlotte Ardrey Kell 67-65 in overtime at Wheatmore High School. Demary tied the score with a free throw, then had a steal and layup for the winning points in the extra period.

It was the first state title for Millbrook and the second runner-up finish for Kell. It also marked the first overtime game in N.C. 4A title game history since 2005.

In the SCHSL 5A championship game, River Bluff knocked off four-time defending state champion 57-45 to end Dorman’s pursuit of history in a game played at USC-Aiken.

Dorman was looking to become the first school to win straight state titles since Charleston had done so from 1922 to 1926.
